Tēnā koutou e te iwi,

What a vibrant term of learning and growth we are having! Across the school, our classrooms have been buzzing with curiosity, enthusiasm, and connection. Here is an update on what our tamariki have been exploring, along with a look at some exciting events coming up on our calendar.

Health & Well-being: Living Our Value of Whakaute

This term, our learning is centered on the Health Curriculum and our core school value of Whakaute (Respect), with a focus on teaching our children to respect their bodies.

Our tamariki have been very excited to have the Life Education bus at kura, and interacting with Harold and the Life Education teacher Chantelle.

What makes this visit even more impactful is how beautifully Life Education aligns with MITEY, our ongoing positive mental health programme. By blending Life Education's interactive lessons with our MITEY framework, we are able to provide a comprehensive approach to nurturing both the physical health and emotional resilience of our tamariki.

Looking Ahead: Hygiene & Puberty

As we move forward, we are preparing to transition into our next health unit, which will focus on hygiene (Year 1 - 4) and hygiene & puberty (Year 5 & 6).

  • Information Letter: A detailed information letter regarding these upcoming lessons has been sent home with your child.
  • Have Questions? If you have any questions, need further clarification, or would like to chat about the curriculum content, please feel free to:
    • Approach your child’s classroom teacher.
    • Reach out directly to Whaea Becks at rshepard@arataki.school.nz.

Next Week: Maths Week is Here!

Get ready to count, solve, and celebrate—Maths Week is happening next week! We have a fantastic lineup of daily challenges and exciting competitions designed to show our tamariki just how fun and creative mathematics can be. There will be plenty of opportunities for everyone to get involved, show off their problem-solving skills, and yes—there may even be some awesome spot prizes up for grabs!

Save the Date: Book Character Mufti Day!

Mark your calendars for Thursday, 20th August for our Book Character Mufti Day!

  • Bring a Book for the Book Sale: We are asking whānau to have a look around at home for any books your children are no longer reading. Children can bring these into school to be sold during our mufti day for a gold coin donation so other children can enjoy them and to raise money for our playground.
  • More Details: Please see the ATK PTA flyer for further information.

Message from Tauranga City Council - Mobility Parks Kaimanawa and Grenada St

A reminder that only vehicles displaying a current ‘mobility permit card’ can park in mobility parks. The parking fine in NZ for using a mobility park without a valid permit displayed is $750 and enforced by local council. Please ensure these parks are kept free for community that need them and are permitted to use.

Winter Bugs and Attendance Notification

As the weather gets colder, we are seeing a few more seasonal sniffles, coughs, and winter bugs going around.

Please let the office know if your tamariki will be staying home as early as possible. The easiest way to report an absence is through HERO.  You can also text 022 565 0021 or email office@arataki.school.nz.

We look forward to welcoming tamariki back once they are feeling better and clear of major symptoms.

Thank you for your ongoing support and partnership in your children's learning journey.

Nga mihi nui,

Vicki Hiini - Tumuaki/Principal

Room 26 - 100 Days at School

Hikurangi has officially reached a huge milestone -100 days of school!

Every morning, our tamariki tracked our progress to 100 while building daily math skills. We used tens frames, number flip charts, and base ten charts to visualize how ones build into tens and hundreds.

When Day 100 arrived, we celebrated with a full day of activities:

Dressing Up & Parade: We dressed as 100-year-olds and paraded around the school to show off our costumes.

100 Exercises: We headed out to the courts to complete 100 exercises to get our old bones moving.

Creative Writing: We wrote sentences imagining what we will do when we turn 100.

Fairy Bread: We made and ate 100 and 1000 sprinkle fairy bread.

Movie & Popcorn: We wrapped up the day relaxing with popcorn and a short film.

Ka pai to Hikurangi for 100 fantastic days of learning and fun!
